Rietberg Castle

The Outbound Castle Rietberg was the seat of the Counts of Rietberg at the site of the later Franciscan monastery in the city of Rietberg . It is not to be confused with the later Rietberg Castle .

history

The Counts of Werl-Arnsberg , at the time of Count Konrad II († 1092) or Frederick the Arguable , built a low castle in a swampy arch of the Ems to secure their power . An arnsberg castle must have already existed around 1100. At the castle there will be a motte in the form of a moth have acted. It was strategically located at the intersection of the count's area of interest and the secular areas of influence of the dioceses of Münster , Paderborn and Osnabrück . The complex was protected by the swampy terrain, walls and ramparts.

For a time, Count Heinrich von Arnsberg, the brother of Frederick the Warrior, resided in the castle as Vogt of the Diocese of Paderborn. The castle was destroyed in 1124 by Lothar von Süpplingenburg after the death of Frederick and then rebuilt. The castle can already be traced back to 1141.

After the division of the estate between Count Gottfried III. and Konrad I. von Rietberg, the castle served as the headquarters of the Counts of Rietberg founded by Konrad.

In place of the old castle, a new castle was built elsewhere in 1353, which was the seat of the Rietberg lords until the end of the Old Kingdom. A settlement had developed in the vicinity of the old castle and received town charter in 1374. The old castle served at times as a widow's seat and probably also for administrative purposes. After the county was re-Catholicized in the 17th century, a Franciscan monastery was founded on the site of the old castle in 1619 .
