The castle Rittersdorf is located on the Nims in the municipality Rittersdorf in Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate .
history
The moated castle was first mentioned in a document in 1263. A Theodoric von Rittersdorf, who built the complex - presumably as sub-bailiff of the Counts of Luxembourg - for the Abbey of Sankt Maximin in Trier comes into consideration as the builder . The castle's task was probably to secure the Trier-Bitburg-Prüm-Cologne road.
In 1290 King Rudolf von Habsburg gave permission to build a keep . The lords of Enschringen had been the owners of the Rittersdorf fief since the 15th century . From 1550 onwards they had a residential building with two round towers built.
The two villages of Nattenheim and Rittersdorf belonged to the rule of Rittersdorf . The manor and castle belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg until the end of the 18th century and were thus part of the Austrian Netherlands .
Todays use
Between 1978 and 1987 the facility was extensively renovated. Today the facility serves as a restaurant and local history museum. The castle also houses a wedding room for the registry office of the Bitburger Land community .

The almost square complex is surrounded by a moat . On the east side is the round, 26 meter high keep . A residential tower from around 1300 is on the north side. There is also a residential building from 1550 and a coat of arms gate from 1575.
