Schujen Castle

Castle Schujen ( Latvian Skujenes pils ) was a Teutonic castle of the Livonian Order , the ruins of which are in the village of Skujene (German: Schujen), Amata district , Vidzeme . Historically, Schujen was part of the Wenden district in historic Livonia .

history

The castle Schujen was the end point of a chain of castles along the Livonian Aa ( Gauja ) against attacks Lithuanian troops from the castles Rodenpois - Castle Lemburg ( Mālpils ) - Nitau ( Nitaures pils ) - Jürgensburg ( Zaubes pils ) - Neuchâtel ( Jaunpils ) and Castle Schujen duration.

The district of Schujen was first mentioned in a loan letter in 1440 as "Schuen" and the parish "Schuyen" was named in 1445. In 1555 it is mentioned that Schujen Castle, as “arx”, was directly subordinate to the landlords of the Livonian Order, who resided in Segewold Castle. A list of the vassals of Schujen Castle has come down to us from 1464.

During the Livonian War , Russian and Tatar troops attacked Seßwegen Castle unsuccessfully in the winter of 1559 , turned north and destroyed the castles Smilten, Schujen and Nitau. In the Jam Zapolski peace treaty , Shujen Castle was called "Шкуин" in Russian. As part of the Wenden Voivodeship of the Duchy of Livonia , it was administered by Poland-Lithuania . Schujen Castle was not restored and fell into disrepair.

description

Schujen Castle had a floor plan of 50 × 70 meters and was protected in the southeast and northeast by a 15 meter deep gorge of a tributary of the Ammat. On the southwest side there was a 20 meter wide and 3-5 meter deep protective ditch , which was crossed by a bridge to the entrance of the castle.
