The castle Sparberg is the ruins of a hilltop castle in Sparberg , a district of Hirschberg in Thuringia Saale-Orla .
The castle ruins are located on a hill above the village not far from the church of St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus . Remains of a rectangular main building with an almost square section, parts of a security wall and the remains of a higher-lying and voluminous keep have been preserved . The area is freely accessible, but hardly secured and not signposted or explained.
Theories about the origins of the castle go way back to the assumption that the castle was part of the Limes Sorabicus . Based on the first documented mention of the place in 1202, a foundation by followers of the Diepoldinger vom Haidstein , who called themselves Sparnberg, Hirschberg , Waldstein and Sparneck during the founding phase, is plausible . The successors of ownership in the place were the families von Sack and Reitzenstein .
