St. Simon and Jude Thaddäus (Sparnberg)
The Protestant village church of St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus is in the Sparnberg district of the city of Hirschberg in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .
The church stands on a hill not far from the Sparnberg castle ruins . Due to the elevation and the entrance area secured by a gate wall, it has the features of a fortified church . The essentially late Gothic hall church with its polygonal eastern end and west tower was built between 1437 and 1439. The furnishings include a pulpit altar and a baptismal angel , which are typical of the area around the courtyard and which can be attributed to the Knoll family of sculptors . The altar bears the coat of arms of the von Reitzenstein and Zedtwitz family . Because of its proximity to the inner-German border , no maintenance work was carried out during the GDR period. In the 2000s a comprehensive renovation took place during which frescoes were also exposed.
Originally the church belonged to the original parish of Berg . Since 1626 it has asserted parochial rights over the places Arlas , Pottiga , Blankenberg and some small settlements on the other side of the Saale . Only in 1856 was Sparnberg able to break away from the Berger parish .
