St. German Castle

The St. German Castle , also known as Waldfeste , is a defunct Niederungsburg in the area of the Sankt Germanshof district of the Bobenthal municipality in the Südwestpfalz district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

The castle was founded by Abbot Samuel after 1055 as a priory to secure the Abbey of Weißenburg to the west, together with the priests of St. Paul in the north, St. Remigius in the east and St. Panthaleon in the south of the city. These four castles were later expanded into fortifications. In 1577 the castle came into the possession of the brothers Christoph and Hans Haug von Steinkallenfels as a fief . The castle was destroyed in 1522 and fell into disrepair in 1592.

A Romanesque cellar under the southeast wing of the Sankt Germanshof 9/10 courtyard complex has been preserved from the square castle complex.
