history

The name Starhemberg is derived from the original name 'starker Berg' or 'Starkenberg'. There is no connection with the Upper Austrian noble family Starhemberg . Margrave Otakar III is considered to be the builder . von Styria, who built a small castle on this site between 1140 and 1145 . The Piesting was at that time the border between Styria and the Ostmark . In 1192 Styria and with it the castle fell to the Babenbergs . The last Duke of the Babenbergs, Frederick the Warrior , had the castle expanded and fortified. In the 13th century Starhemberg was one of the most important castles in Lower Austria.

In times of war, the archive and the family treasure were saved here and guarded by the Teutonic Knight Order . After the Battle of Dürnkrut in 1278, the Habsburgs received the castle. In 1482 the castle was taken by Matthias Corvinus .

During the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, the castle offered the surrounding population protection from the troops of the Ottoman army .

In order to avoid the new roof tax , the Counts of Heussenstein had doors and window frames broken out around 1800 and the roofs covered. This started the ruin of the castle. A large part of the hall collapsed around 1870. Until the middle of the 20th century, the ruins were used by the population for the extraction of building materials.

In the spring of 1945 there was a unit of the Waffen SS in the ruins , which maintained an observation post in the tower above the chapel. Russian artillery fire caused severe damage to the walls.

In the second half of the 20th century, a local castle association ("Friends of Starhemberg Castle") tried to restore the ruins. It has been closed to visitors for security reasons since 2007.
