The castle Stolzenau is an Outbound castle in Stolzenau in Lower Saxony . It was built in 1346 by the Counts of Hoya on the Weser as a border fortress to the Schluesselburg Castle, four kilometers to the south, built by the Bishops of Minden in 1336 . In the 16th century, the castle was transformed into a palace that served as the residence of the Counts of Hoya.

The first written mention of the castle Stolzenau took place in 1370 when Verlehnung two Burgmann seats . From 1400 there was an expansion to a moated castle with a moat system and a bailey . In 1477 a keep on the outer bailey was mentioned as the Burgmann's seat. With the death of Count Friedrich in 1503, the County of Hoya and with it Stolzenau Castle were taken over as a fiefdom by the Dukes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg . Between 1530 and 1569 the moated castle was transformed into a residential palace. The stone material required came from the demolition of the churches in Holzhausen and Leese and the church of the Schinna monastery . In 1530 a defense tower was built in the northeast of the complex and the outer bailey was expanded. Until the death of the last Count of Hoya, Otto VIII. In 1582, the castle served as a sub-county for non-ruling counts. When the counts died out, Stolzenau and the castle fell to the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . The last fortification work was carried out in 1619. During the Thirty Years' War , the castle was destroyed by imperial troops in 1627 . They survived only two farm buildings. 1740 a reconstruction took place of a former castle building to the office building of the Office Stolzenau . Around 1800 the office building opposite the palace area was rebuilt. When the district of Stolzenau was formed in 1885, it became the seat of the district administration and remained the domicile of the domain tenant until 1908. The administration of the Stolzenau district was housed in the administrative building until 1932. In the time of National Socialism it served as a warehouse for the Reich Labor Service . After the Second World War , the office building housed refugees from 1945. In 1965 it was demolished for the construction of a secondary school .
