Life

Seal of Otto VIII von Hoya from 1581

Otto was one of the youngest sons of Jobst II von Hoya and his wife Anna von Gleichen . First he was canon in Cologne and Verden . After the death of his older and childless brother Albrecht in 1563, he and his brother Erich took over the government of the county. In 1568 Otto married Agnes von Bentheim and Steinfurt , the widow of Count Johann II von Rietberg , who was also the mother of the wife of Otto's brother Erich ( Armgard von Rietberg ). After Erich died childless in 1575, Otto ruled the county alone.

"Otto, Grafe zur Hoya and Burghausen" signed the concord formula of 1577 and the concord book of 1580.

Otto VIII also died childless on November 25, 1582 at Hoya Castle and was buried in St. Martin's Church in Nienburg / Weser , where his sarcophagus is located in the church's tower hall today. Immediately after Otto's death, the county was taken over by the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .
