The castle Zwenkau , including Castle Zwenkau or Schlossberg called, is an Outbound castle , later Castle and the current town hall in the town of Zwenkau (Mayor-Ahnert-Platz 1) in the district of Leipzig in Saxony .

history

The castle complex was founded in the 9th century as a Slavic rampart , a fortified mansion for "Slavic seniors" and was the seat of a Burgwards Zuenkouua around 950 .

In 974 Emperor Otto II gave the "civitas", castle and property, to the diocese of Merseburg , which was destroyed in the episcopal investiture dispute around 1115 , restored after 1120, walled in 1126 and after 1200 the center of the episcopal office of Zwenkau.

After 1236, the castle was rebuilt as a fortified "Schlößlein" with moats, walls, gate, tower and bridge and was in 1240 the seat of a bishop's bailiff until 1271 seat of a bailiff office was.

In 1315 the castle was stormed by Margrave Friedrich the Freidigen and destroyed by the Hussites in 1430, destroyed again between 1446 and 1451 in the Saxon Civil War.

In 1544 the palace complex was rebuilt as a three-wing complex and was electoral (from 1806 royal) Saxon chamber property from 1562 until its dissolution in 1837 , then royal Saxon court office and in 1875 district court of the Leipzig district administration . In the meantime, the palace complex suffered multiple destruction and restoration.

In the period from 1900 to 2005 extensive renovations took place, the construction of a new detention house, a gate construction , reconstruction and conversion of the south wing as well as renovation of the surrounding walls and redesign of the inner courtyard.
