Description of coat of arms

The state law of November 15, 1990 on the symbols of the Burgenland (State Law Gazette for Burgenland 16/1991, issued and sent on March 4, 1991) regulates the description of the coat of arms (blazon)

in 2
“In a golden shield a red, golden crowned and armored, red-tongued, resisting eagle with outstretched wings, which stands on a black rock, is accompanied in the upper corners by two black, broad-ended little crosses and its chest with a three- fold split by red and frilly and gold-edged label is occupied. It can be in color or in black and white. "
Furthermore § 3
State seal of Burgenland: The state seal of Burgenland is round and has the state coat of arms with the inscription "Land Burgenland".

symbolism

The eagle symbol is reminiscent of the medieval Counts of Mattersdorf-Forchtenstein , the breastplate to the Count of Güssing-Bernstein . Together, it indicates the union of the northern and southern parts of the country.

history

When Burgenland broke away from Hungary after 1918 and joined Austria as the new federal state, a state coat of arms had to be designed. In the spring of 1922, the coat of arms was developed under the direction of Alfred Anthony von Siegenfeld from the Institute for Genealogy, Family Law and Heraldry in Vienna . The Mattersdorf-Forchtensteiner eagle can also be found in the Bajót coat of arms .
