The Freiberg castle ruins are located south of the hamlet of Grassen in the municipality of Frauenstein in Carinthia . The remains of the former princely castle are under monument protection .
Freiberg stands on a small rock hill above the Glantal not far from Frauenstein Castle . First mentioned in 1181 as castrum Vrieberch , Freiberg was the ducal main castle in Carinthia from the 12th century on. Duke Bernhard von Spanheim († 1256) let it expand generously and gave it an extensive regional court. When at the end of the 13th century the Carinthian nobility turned against Duke Meinhard von Görz , who lived in Tyrol, the Duke sent his son Otto to Carinthia, who settled on Freiberg in 1307. He invited the Carinthian gentlemen to Freiberg, but then took the guests prisoner and had them executed on the main square in St. Veit . In the following time the castle was used as a pawn object, changed hands frequently, gradually fell into disrepair and was probably an abandoned ruin by the middle of the 15th century. In 1533 it was referred to as the "desolate tower".
Of the once extensive grounds, the mid-20th century was completely overgrown, the remains of two are still Bergfriede preserved, can resulting in the conclusion that there could have been a double castle. The two-storey castle chapel , which was also mentioned when it was first mentioned in 1181, has also been partially preserved. The chapel and a tower have recently been restored.
