The castle ruin Kirchschlag in the Buckligen Welt is a historical building in the municipality of the same name Kirchschlag in the Buckligen Welt in the Austrian state of Lower Austria .
history
The hilltop castle was built in the 12th century on the 480 m high Schlossberg. After it was connected to the place by a circular wall , it formed an important fortification to secure the eastern border. As the owners of the castle, there are important families such as the Lords of Wildon from Styria, the Kuenringers , Güssinger , Pottendorfer , Puchheimers and, most recently, the Hungarian Counts Pálffy . Even Hungary's King Matthias Corvinus was lord of the castle in Kirchschlag before Emperor Maximilian I recaptured Kirchschlag after his death .
The castle began to fall into disrepair around 1650 when Hans Christoph III. von Puchheim had the courtyard house , today's town hall, built in the village and moved his residence there. The Counts Pálffy did not move into the Kirchschlag Castle either, but moved their seat to the better preserved Krumbach Castle , which continued to decline.
Kirchschlag Castle, like Güns Castle , could never be conquered by the Turks (1532 and 1683). The castle could not be taken by the Haiduken (1605), the robber hordes of the Hungarian rebel Gábor Bethlen (1621) and the Kuruzzen (1703) and offered the population safe protection.
After the castle had had various private owners from 1848, it was ultimately acquired by the Kirchschlag community.
Todays use
The castle ruins , which are freely accessible all year round , have been partially restored and reasonably well maintained. The 22 m high keep (“fire tower”) serves as a lookout point .
Before Christmas, the castle is the scene of the three-day Kirchschlager Advent market, which attracts around 5000 visitors every year.
From 2001 to 2012 the castle was the special stage of a rock festival in the summer.
