The remains of the abandoned hill castle Burg Morau are located in the Morau district of the municipality of St. Oswald bei Haslach in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria .

geography

The Burgstall is located at 672  m above sea level. A. is directly on the border with the Czech Republic opposite the confluence of the Ottenschlager Bach / Otovský potok in the Zwettlbach / Světlá. It is located near the “Schusterhäusl”, on the right of the path to the Schwarzenbergschen Schwemmkanal .

history

Morau Castle was destroyed by the Hussites in 1427 . It is not known whether the castle had the same name as the place it is today, but it can be assumed; the names of the first owners are also unknown. It was not until 1650 that the judge of Haslach called himself Hanns Dietmayr von Morau († 1637). The name refers to the Burgplatz, which was probably no longer habitable at that time, but to which aristocratic rights and privileges were still attached. Oral tradition has it that the stones of the castle were used to build the church tower of St. Oswald in the 18th century.

Morau Castle today

Morau Castle stood on the “Schlossberg” site. The walls, which are now heavily overgrown, are still 1.50 to 2.30 m thick. As can be deduced from the archaeological findings, two round towers were connected by a shield wall and protected the access. A continuous wall enclosed the Burgplatz. The castle was on the top of a moderately high mountain ( altitude 683 m). To the north, the Burgplatz drops off steeply to a gorge. In front of the castle there was a moat of considerable depth. The remains of the medieval complex can still be seen despite the leveling.
