Peilenstein castle ruins

The Peilenstein castle ruin , sometimes also called Peilstein , is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the Altenhof district of the parish of Pfarrkirchen im Mühlkreis in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria . The remains of this castle complex are in the "Weinleiten" above the Falkenstein castle ruins and approx. 200 m west of the Meierhof on a spur that points towards the Danube. The name Peilstein supposedly comes from "bistein"; this means a hunting ground where the game defended itself against dogs.

history

Peilstein was built by the Peilsteiners around 1100 as a wooden castle. 1150 a Heinricus de Peilenstein is named. The daughter of Count Konrad I von Peilstein, Jutta, was the wife of Otto von Machland . The Peilsteiner died out around 1229. Peilstein was also part of the Tannberg rule . In 1354 Peilstein came to the Passau bishopric . 1370 worked here as burgrave Ottokar von Wolfstein. Then nurses followed Peilstein; as such are to be mentioned: Achaz Prembser, Aegif Tettenhaimer, Wolf Elrechinger (1520) and Hans Nussdorfer (1525).

Whether the facility was actually called Peilenstein (Peilstein) is, however, questionable. Possibly it was a castle that was assigned to the Falkenstein rulership (double castle). In any case, reading finds (ceramics) and masonry suggest that the castle complex was built in the 12th century, roughly at the same time as the first Falkenstein Castle.

Peilenstein castle ruins today

You can still see the place where a fore tower was. There are also moats and the castle plateau. To the west the terrain drops so steeply that the castle could be considered impregnable from this side. At the crest of the hill there are further remains of the wall. The area below the ruin is also covered by z. Partly covered with hewn stones. From the castle site you have a beautiful view of Rannariedl Castle .

You can get to the castle ruins if you drive from Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis in the direction of Altenhof and at the Meierhof follow the path to the Falkenstein castle ruins for about 100 m. Then you have to climb to the left over an embankment and after another hundred meters you come to the castle square of the Peilenstein ruin.
