history

The polygonal curtain wall , which is still visible today, was probably built in the 12th century. There are reports from chroniclers of this time, according to which barons from Rotenburg (from Rothenburg in Lucerne ) could be regarded as builders, as well as from Habsburgs who used it as a fortress. In later years the Nidwalden kept a high watch on the Rotzberg during wartime . In the 17th and 18th centuries, hermits lived on the site in wooden huts. In 1864 a pension was built.

In the early years of Swiss tourism, there were plans in 1909 to build a hotel on the Rotzberg and to open it up with a funicular from the Rotzwinkel . The project was prevented and in 1910 the Swiss Confederation bought the site for 18,000 francs and placed the castle under protection after conservation work. In 1988 exploratory excavations took place. The castle ruins were last extensively renovated by the federal government in the 2010s. In 2015 it became known that the federal government wanted to sell the castle ruins to the canton of Nidwalden.
