The castle ruins Weitenegg stands at settlement Weitenegg in the market town Leiben in the district of Melk in Lower Austria . The former section castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).

location

The ruins of the hilltop castle stand on a narrow high ridge running in an east-west direction, which slopes steeply towards the Danube in the south .

history

In a document, a Luipold Widenich was named in 1108. The county had an eventful ownership history from the end of the 12th century to 1513.

The oldest components are from the 12th century. The structural extensions continued into the 17th century. In the middle of the 18th century the castle fell into disrepair. The eastern keep was almost completely demolished in 1870 and used as building material for the expansion of the ultramarine factory in Weitenegg . The first security and restoration work was carried out around 1900.

architecture

The elongated castle complex has a bailey in the east. The actual castle complex consisted of three successive courtyards with high walls and castle buildings on the long sides and two mountain tombs in the east and west.
