The Tafelberg castle site was a small fortification built in the Middle Ages on the southeastern outskirts of Udestedt in the Sömmerda district in Thuringia .

history

According to local tradition, the hill near Udestedt , known as Table Mountain , was a pagan place of worship.

The earliest mention of aristocratic witnesses who are connected with the place Udestedt comes from the year 1219, they are ministerials of the Landgraves of Thuringia. Udestedt Castle, north of Erfurt, was used as a venue in 1254 when an agent (?) Of the Archbishop of Mainz and the Landgrave of Thuringia compared themselves on a list of contentious issues. In 1345 the city of Erfurt bought the village of Udestedt from Rudolf von Mellingen for 500 marks. This purchase is apparently in connection with the end of the Thuringian Count War. In the same year, the city of Erfurt received Udestedt Castle from the Thuringian Landgrave as thanks for its support. From then on, this secured the city's trade routes to the north and served to protect the rural communities in Erfurt.

Structural system

The castle complex of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte) consisted of the castle hill still existing today with a surrounding moat . From the system there is still a cone of rubble several meters high and 20 meters in diameter. At the turn of the century there was a park of the estate south of the castle site. The facility is a designated ground monument .
