Burkard Hillebrands (* 1957 ) is an experimental physicist and professor of physics at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and head of the Magnetism Working Group there .

Academic career

Burkard Hillebrands studied physics at the University of Cologne from 1977 to 1982 and received his doctorate there in 1986. After a postdoc at the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona (USA), Hillebrands worked at the 2nd Physics Institute of RWTH Aachen University from 1988 to 1994 . There he completed his habilitation in 1993 with his thesis "Brillouin light scattering in artificially layered magnetic structures". In 1994 he followed a call to the Physics Institute of the University of Karlsruhe and in 1995 moved to the University of Kaiserslautern as a professor . From September 2006 to August 2014, he was also Vice President for Research, Technology and Innovation. From 2016 to 2018 he took over the position of Scientific Director and Board Member of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW).

Hillebrands is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Physics (UK) and the American Physical Society . Since 2010 he has been a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz and, since 2017, chairman of the mathematics and science class combined with the office of vice-president of the academy. He has also been a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) since 2018. Since 2018 he has been Chair of the C9 Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). He is a member of the permanent commission for research in Germany and Europe of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). Since 2016 he has been the vice-spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 173 "Spin + X: Spin in its collective environment" of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He has been on the board of the European Magnetism Association (EMA) since it was founded in 2016 and its President since 2019. In 2005 Hillebrands received an IEEE Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecturer Award. In 2016 Hillebrands received an ERC Advanced Grant.

research

Burkard Hillebrands' research area is spintronics . In particular, he works on spin dynamics, magnonics and on the material properties of ultra-thin magnetic films, heterostructures and nanostructures. In the field of spin dynamics and magnonics, he primarily researches the properties of spin waves and their quanta, the magnons, and their use in future applications in information technology, magnon gases, condensates and magnonic supercurrents, magnon crystals and magnetic memories. Further research interests lie in spin transport processes, in particular on phenomena of the conversion between magnon, spin and charge currents (spin Hall effects, spin Seebeck effects). Hillebrands has a special methodological interest in the space-, time- and phase-resolved Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and in time-resolved Kerr effects .

Publications

In addition to patents and book chapters, Hillebrands has published more than 420 publications in refereed international journals. He was also co-editor of the Springer TAP book series "Spin Dynamics in Confined Magnetic Structures" .
