Burkhard Schröder (born December 19, 1957 in Berlin ) is a former German national basketball player .

Life

Schröder only started playing basketball late at the age of 16 in the B youth team at BSV 92 (former Bundesliga club) in Berlin. He quickly became a member of the Berlin "Stadtmannschaft" and moved to DTV Charlottenburg in the local A-youth, which came together as a club team as a kind of Berlin selection in order to be more successful nationwide.

In 1977 Schröder received an offer to study at a small college in South Dakota , USA . He was thus one of the first young German players to play basketball on a college team in the USA. There he was a member of the basketball team of Huron College (NAIA Division II). After differences with the coach, however, he soon returned to Berlin and continued to play for DTV-Charlottenburg, which was represented in the 2nd Bundesliga North at the time .

In 1979 Schröder then moved to the first Bundesliga for MTV Giessen . There he played two seasons. From the then national coach Bernd Röder he was accepted into the squad of the German Basketball Federation and played a few games in the B selection of the DBB.

In 1981 Schröder returned from Gießen to DTV Charlottenburg. His old club had previously been promoted to the first Bundesliga and Schröder and Matthias Strauss strengthened the promoted team. The team just managed to stay in the league. In the following period the foundation stone for Bundesliga basketball (1st Bundesliga) was laid in Berlin, the nucleus of ALBA Berlin , so to speak . In 1985 the DTV team reached the final of the German championship, but had to admit defeat to TuS Bayer 04 Leverkusen and became German runner-up.

In 1984, Schröder made his senior national team debut and had a total of 38 international matches. The best placement of the 1980s was achieved by the German team at the 1985 European Championship in front of a home crowd when they reached fifth place. In 1986 Schröder took part in the World Cup in Spain . There, the German team was eliminated in the preliminary round.

After the 1987/1988 season, Schröder ended his basketball career at DTV Charlottenburg and began his career as a basketball coach the following season, when he coached the DTV team in the play-offs. Schröder achieved his greatest success as a basketball coach when he made promotion to the first Bundesliga with the second division team of TuS Lichterfelde in 1995. However, TuS Lichterfelde did not perceive its league position for economic reasons.

In the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons Schröder was head coach of the youth league team (JBBL) of DBV Charlottenburg.

Burkhard Schröder has been a board member for competitive sports at the Berlin Basketball Association since 2009.

Schröder works as a sports teacher at a Berlin school.
