This is followed by the two employees for the "rough", Jo and Meg. Jo is an unrivaled fighter who can slip into her Mecha Django if necessary to face heavier opponents. Meg is inseparable from her, the two are friends for life. Finally they recruit the young Kyōhei, who works as a cook for them.

The group around Sei is now increasingly confronted with robots that have gone out of control . There seem to be connections between the incidents and everything points to the police, who call themselves RAPT , as masterminds who are trying to expand their sphere of influence to all of Japan.

Characters

Jo (Jo Carpenter, her code name when she and Meg are smuggled into the St. Luciana Lyceum) ( ジ ョ ウ , )

She has blind control over her two Desert Eagles, and when the going gets tough, she has a powerful mecha on her side in Django . She and Meg met in New York, where Jo and Meg only survived because they stood by each other. Most of the time, she also uses firearms, only in one episode are kung fu powers awakened in her, which can save the team *. Kyohei wants to earn enough money with his job to start training as a pastry chef in France.

Supporting characters

Leo (Leo Jinno)

Leo is a gifted mechanic who built Django and repairs and maintains it. Later it turns out that Leo is a fighter who should not be underestimated in terms of both courage and danger.

Ichimonji Hayao

Ichimonji, while sporadic, is important because he provides information that is not directly apparent from the plot. For example, that RAPT not only acts with exaggerated harshness against suspected criminals, but also that those arrested by RAPT are often not brought to justice because they die beforehand.

Takane Katsu

Takane used to be the leader of a women's motorcycle gang. However, she is now a police officer with the Osaka and Kobe Police Department. She is combative, has a pronounced sense of justice and a pronounced stubbornness. Once she has got something on her mind, she can hardly be dissuaded from it. Even though she is a police officer, she continues to wear the gangs of her.

Marion

Marion is the same age as Jo because she is also a product of the secret project that Jo escaped. She is an equal opponent. Although Jo and Marion fight a life and death fight, the battle of strength ends in a draw, both fighters survive the fight physically unharmed.

Glenford

Glenford does not appear until the end of the series, but he has an important role to play. He turns Tokyo into a police state; his declared goal is a state in which only stupid sheep live and can be sheared. Especially those who don't ask questions. He is the driving force through which the plot strives towards the final showdown in no time at all.

Conception

The series combines the action-heavy science fiction of director Koichi Ohata, which has been his trademark since the series MD Geist , with influences from the Western genre. Both the Mecha and Jo behave in a similar way to the heroes of Western films and often adopt typical cowboy poses. The plot is carried by the four female main characters, with fan service also frequently occurring.

Origin and publications

The idea for the 24-episode series came about in the Gonzo animation studio . Director Koichi Ohata realized the script written by Fumihiko Shimo . The characters were designed by Kanetoshi Kamimoto and Osamu Horiuchi , with Ugetsu Hakua providing the concept sketches. Aki Makoto and Toshikazu Ishiwata were the artistic directors .

In Japan, the series was broadcast from April 6, 2004 to September 21, 2004 on Animax , Bandai Channel and TV Asahi and later offered on DVD. Outside of Japan, the series appeared in numerous Western countries such as the United States, France and Russia.

Adaptations

Manga

With the original title Bakuretsu Tenshi: Angel's Adolescence ( 爆裂 天使 Angel's Adolescence) a manga was released on July 27, 2004 as a prequel for the anime television series. It was drawn by Minoru Murao and appeared on MediaWorks in Dengeki Comic Gao! .

After being translated into English, the manga was offered in the German version by Planet Manga in autumn 2005 .

OVA

The OVA Burst Angel: Infinity ( 爆裂 天使 -INFINITY- ) was released on March 23, 2007. In the production were essentially the same people who participated in the television series. However, there are far fewer characters. It consists of an episode that is about a psychopath who is content to film the deeds of his cyborg. After he had already brought Meg's little friend Shierly to the hospital, he went on to hunt Meg.

reception

According to the German magazine Animania , the series is determined by the very different characters of the female main characters. They often rely on fan service, but not as flatly as in other productions. In particular, Jo and Django showed the influence of a western style on the series, which also had an impact on the music and the surroundings. The music supports the plot well and the animations are partly at a high level. However, the computer graphics showed weaknesses in some places, so that the series does not reach the quality as the Last Exile series previously produced by Studio Gonzo . The plot is not very profound and designed for action, the character of Kyohei seems out of place, he does not fit into the rest of the series. Still, Burst Angel offers good "popcorn entertainment" .
