history

The company traces its history back to George Burton (* 1829 in Leek ), who first baked biscuits in Blackpool in the mid-19th century. The products of the rapidly growing business were subsequently awarded several international awards. George Burton's grandson Joseph Burton founded the family business Burton's Gold Medal Biscuits in 1935. Potato chips and other snacks were also produced in Slough until the 1980s, but this branch was discontinued due to lower sales. Associated British Foods held a stake in Burton's for around five decades until 2000, when it sold its stake to the US venture capital firm Hicks , Muse, Tate & Furst.

The current company was created in 2000 through the merger of the Horizon Biscuit Company Ltd. with Burton's Gold Medal Biscuits to Burton's Food Ltd., the second largest biscuit manufacturer in Great Britain. In 2007 the company went into the hands of the British investment company Duke Street Capital, which in September 2009 sold the majority of the shares to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Apollo Global Management . In November 2011, the company was renamed Burton's Biscuit Company. Since November 2013, Burton's has been owned by the Canadian pension fund Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan . In August 2016, Mondelēz International acquired Burton's license to sell Cadbury biscuits worldwide for £ 200 million (Cadbury plc had been a subsidiary of Kraft Foods since 2010, from which Mondelēz International spun off in 2012 and became the new owner of Cadbury).
