The Busoga Railway was the first railway in Uganda .
route
From 1909, plans were developed to connect the port of Jinja on Lake Victoria and the port of Namasagali on Lake Kioga with a railway. The route was led along the White Nile . The operating company and the route itself were called the Busoga Railway (English for Busoga Railway ).
The main line was 95 km long, was built in narrow gauge and went into operation along its entire length in 1912. The Busoga Railway also operated the steamboats on Lake Kioga. It initially represented an island operation . Connection to the Uganda Railway was provided by steamboats on Lake Victoria, which ran from Jinja Pier to the then western terminus of the Uganda Railway in Kisumu , also located on Lake Victoria. It was not until 1928 that the Uganda railway was connected to the Busoga railway at Mbulamuti station and used it for its onward journey to Jinja. In the run-up to this event, the Busoga Railway was taken over by the Uganda Railway in 1924 .
In 1960/61 the Uganda Railway between Busembatia and Jinja was relocated to a new, more direct and shorter route. The old route was also newly connected to the Uganda Railway in 1962 for traffic to Namasagali in Bukonte with a more direct and shorter route. In 1968 the Busoga railway was abandoned.
