The Busse memorial is a memorial in the north German city of Bremerhaven . It was built in 1936 according to a design by the Hamburg architect Fritz Höger in the style of late brick expressionism. It commemorates the commissioning of the fishing steamer Sagitta by the shipowner Friedrich Busse in 1885, which marked the beginning of modern deep-sea fishing in Germany.

location

The monument is located in the Geestemünde district on the left bank of the Geeste . It was built directly at the foot of the eastern bridgehead of the Old Geeste Bridge .

history

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the start of the age of modern deep-sea fishing in Bremerhaven with the commissioning of the steamer Sagitta, the Wesermünde Chamber of Commerce and Industry planned to erect two memorials. One was intended to commemorate the pioneering work of the shipowner Friedrich Busse, the second to all seafarers who had died in the course of their work. While the memorial for the seafarers' planning remained, the renowned architect Fritz Höger was hired for the realization of the Busse memorial.

Höger created a semi-arch made of clinker bricks. On the inside, on the left edge, a relief in stylized form shows deep-sea fishermen at work, on the back an inscription reminds of Friedrich Busse. Höger's design was carried out by the construction business of master bricklayer Dietrich Dehning from Geestemünde.

The surrounding inscription reads:

Tougher hardworking wrestles from the earth - gigantic courage to the sea - our people fight hunger

The monument was inaugurated on October 24, 1936 in the presence of Hermann Göring . In 1978 it was placed under monument protection.
