Claude "Butch" Harmon, Jr. (born August 28, 1943 ) is one of the most famous and successful US golf coaches.

Life

His father Claude Harmon was a Masters Champion in 1948 and also a golf instructor. Harmon's brothers Craig and Bill are also golf instructors; his brother Dick, also a top pro, died in 2006 at the age of 58.

Career as a golfer

From 1969 to 1971 Harmon was active on the PGA Tour . In 1971 he won the BC Open.

Work as a trainer

After the end of his career as an active golfer, he went to Morocco and became the personal coach of King Hassan II . Harmon's father had already taught him. In 1975 he returned to the USA and became a golf coach at the Crow Valley Club (Iowa). In the 1980s he withdrew from the coaching profession and was involved in the construction of golf courses. Harmon became known to the general public from 1993 as the coach of Tiger Woods at the beginning of his career. Harmon has also worked with a number of top players including major winners Greg Norman , Davis Love III , Fred Couples , Severiano Ballesteros , Mark Calcavecchia Darren Clarke and, since 2007, Phil Mickelson . Harmon runs the Butch Harmon School of Golf at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In November 2013, in a survey by the US magazine Golf Digest, his colleagues voted him the best golf teacher of the year. It was the seventh top spot in a row.
