The butter market is a place in Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate . The official name is Am Markt .

location

The butter market is located in the city center of Saarburg. It is divided into two halves by the Leuk and has a tubular shape similar to a road in the eastern and western parts on both sides of the river. At the southern end of the square is the 18 m high Saarburg waterfall.

history

The square was first mentioned in a document in 1340 when it was paved by Master Smalz. The Leuk was probably diverted as early as the 11th or 12th century and built into the artful system of wall protection, pond feeding and mill supply. The course of the stream is a defining element in the design of the city and square today. The current embankment wall dates back to 1807 and was last restored in 1978.

Cultural monuments

According to the list of monuments, there are several outstanding cultural monuments on the square. Some of the buildings that characterize the cityscape and are listed buildings are described in more detail below:

Former Heyman Department Store (number 4)

House number 4 is a three-storey plastered building from 1913 at the northwest end of the square on the access road to Graf-Siegfried-Straße instead of two previous Baroque buildings. The original windows have been preserved. The building is a typical example of a new building equipped with contemporary decorative shapes from the time of construction, which was fitted into the surroundings. In particular, the sloping mansard hipped roof refers to the Singer house (Am Markt 2).

The Cascata ice cream parlor is located in the building. The Heyman department store used to be in the same building.

House number 8

House number 8 was built in the 17th century. The building is typical of the area. It is hipped at the top of the gable on the square side of the sloping gable roof. The facade is kept simple by means of rectangular window frames. The renovated building, which has been changed on the ground floor, is a typical example of the 17th century Saarburg town hall. At its location, it shapes the square.

House number 9

House number 9 is two classicist buildings united under one house number on the southern market bend. The ground floor is separated from the upper floor by a double cornice. The bar structures of the preserved windows play an important role in the appearance. The right part is the only two-story building on the square. The half-timbered upper storey protrudes supported by simple struts. The gable windows are probably from the 17th century, but the door leaf from the early 19th century. Since large parts of the building have been standing since the 17th century, it is one of the oldest surviving houses on the market. Little is known about the building and house history of the house, which was sometimes used as a red tannery.

House number 16/17

House number 16/17 is a wide, towering, steep-gabled half-gable building that dominates the line image. Here is a typical, massive town house building with two very high floors and a gable floor, which stands out in the elaborate architectural decoration. The plastered building that was erected was divided around 1604 and probably in the 18th century and No. 19 was later expanded to three storeys, with the broken gable contour. In terms of its age as well as its size and design inside and out, the building is a high-ranking early document for the characteristic Saarburg community center.

House number 27

House number 27 is a corner building erected around 1900, which is characterized by an elaborate structure and rich stonemason elements. In the passage you can see medieval corner pillars made of sandstone drums on mighty bases, the origin of which (old gateway or church) has not been clarified. The property is formally similar to the Horse Market 1 building. On the flank of the historical row development and in coping with the difficult construction task, the building makes an imaginative contribution to late historicism. As an independent dominant, it is linked to the context of the grown street leading away from the square.

Others

The Saarburger Christkindlmarkt also takes place at the butter market.
