Zadiel (2007)

Zadiel (born May 13, 1982 in Berlin ; real life Mehmet Sasmaz ) is a German belly dancer with Turkish roots.

Life

Zadiel grew up in Berlin-Reinickendorf, where he still lives. After graduating from high school, he trained as an office clerk.

Zadiel discovered his passion for belly dancing at the age of seven when he saw belly dance choreographies on videos of his mother. Zadiel started belly dancing at the age of 15. At first he began to practice secretly in his room. From 2004 he took dance lessons with Horacio Cifuentes.

During this time, he perfected his abilities and skills in the field of belly dance and oriental dance by participating in workshops organized by international belly dancers. Zadiel war has performed in Japan, Egypt, Spain, the USA, Italy and Turkey, among others. He was also booked for music videos. The videos of the bands 1000 GRAM and KALI-SAHARA consist solely of dance sequences developed and choreographed by Zadiel himself.

In addition, the TV channels ARD and RBB reported on him. He had appearances on television shows, a. a. in the ZDF afternoon program inka! . In addition to the television appearances, newspaper articles about Zadiel in Germany were published by the Berliner Zeitung, Der Spiegel and at the same time on August 29, 2012 with the article Zadiel shows it's - belly dance is also in focus for men in a large number of regional newspapers across Germany and in focus . The Tagesspiegel followed in April 2015. In the early summer of 2015, two programs on ZDF showed a contribution about Zadiel that dealt with the person and life as a belly dancer.

The New York Times reported on their blog in 2009. In December 2014, an article about the comeback of male belly dancing in Turkey appeared on Al-Monitor , in which Zadiel was also mentioned.

Others

In addition to his own dance school Zadiraks in Berlin-Moabit, he gave private lessons, a. a. in Malaysia, and held workshops worldwide with over 100 participants. He has also released an instructional DVD.

Since 2007 Zadiel has also been the organizer of the Orientalhane, an oriental dinner and dance show in Berlin. Various belly dancers from all over the world as well as regional dancers and Zadiel's own dance group perform regularly. In July 2014, he organized an offshoot of the Orientalhane in San Francisco for the first time.

Zadiel dances herself and arranges international belly dancers for the organizers of the Gayhane in the Berlin club SO36 , whose integral part is a half-hour belly dance show .

The painter Dietmar Schwenck depicted Zadiel in 2011 in his work “Encounter of Cultures”. This picture shows Zadiel with the Amrumer costume group and hangs in the central exhibition of the Amrumer Mühlenmuseum.
