Butterworth , also Bagan ( Malay : Pier, Mole) is a city in Malaysia and the capital of Seberang Perai , the mainland part of the Malaysian state of Penang .

Geography and location

Butterworth is the sister city of George Town , which is located directly on the island of Penang, and is an important transport hub and port for northern Malaysia. Butterworth is home to the ferry terminal that connects Penang Island with the mainland alongside the Penang Bridge . Butterworth is connected to the air traffic via Penang Airport .

history

Butterworth was established in the mid-19th century as a mainland mooring across from George Town , the capital of Penang, after the British East India Company acquired the Wellesley Province from the Sultan of Kedah in 1798 . The newly established city was named after William John Butterworth , Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1843 to 1855 . Shortly thereafter, a railway line was set up to Taiping to ship the tin ore mined there to Butterworth.
Butterworth is now part of the Seberang Perai administrative unit . It is noticeable that the traditional name Butterworth does not appear officially, although Butterworth is the largest town of Seberang Perais .
