The luxury night train wagons were built in Japan in 1972 and operated as the Silver Star in New Zealand until June 1979 . After the wagons had been parked for more than ten years because of the asbestos-containing insulation, they were sold to Orient-Express Trains & Cruises in 1990 . The company belonged to the British hotel and leisure company Orient-Express Hotels , which was renamed Belmond in March 2014 . At the New Zealand mechanical engineering company A & G Price , the wagons were cleared of asbestos and re-tracked from the Cape gauge (1067 mm) used in New Zealand to the meter gauge (1000 mm) used in Southeast Asia . 24 cars of the 31 vehicle fleet were brought to Singapore, where they were given a new interior and exterior painting. The design comes from Gérard Gallet, who also helped design and overhaul other Orient Express products such as the Pullman Orient Express or the Venice Simplon Orient Express . In addition to sleeping cars with 66 two-bed compartments, the train includes a dining car , a bar car with piano, a saloon car and an open viewing car at the end of the train .
