Byllye Avery
Byllye Avery (born October 20, 1937 in Waynesville , Georgia ) is an American suffragette and social reformer. She seeks to improve social welfare for African American women in the health system of the United States through support groups and advocacy groups .
Byllye Avery studied psychology at Talladega College (BA 1959) and special education at the University of Florida (MA 1969) and worked as a teacher. Her husband's sudden death at the age of 33 drew her interest to African American health care. In 1974 she co-founded the Gainesville Women's Health Center and later became its director. She initiated self-help groups and founded the National Black Women's Health Project in 1983 . She headed this advocacy group until 1990. In 2002, she founded the Avery Institute for Social Change in New York City .
In 1989 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship , and in 2008 she received the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Award.
