Camacho studied mathematics and physics at the Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria in Lima until his graduation in 1964. He then went to the Universidade de Brasília as a mathematician and received his diploma in mathematics from the IMPA in Rio in 1966. From 1967 he was at the University of California, Berkeley , where he received his doctorate in 1971 under Stephen Smale (On x actions). He was then back at IMPA and from 2004 director of IMPA. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

Camacho deals with dynamic systems and their topology.

He received the Carlos Chagas Filh Medal in 2005, became commander of the Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico in 1996 and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico in 2000. In 1996 he received the Third World Academy of Sciences Prize , the Premio Almirante Álvaro Alberto and the National Prize for Science and Technology of Brazil (Prêmio Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia).

In 1990 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto (Problems on limit sets on foliations of complex projective spaces). He was twice President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society.
