Chander Kishan Daphtary (different spelling of the name: Chander Kishan Daftari ; Tamil : சி. கே. தபத்ரி ; * April 1, 1893 ; † around February 18, 1983 ) was an Indian lawyer who, among other things, served as Attorney General of India ) was.

Life

Chander Kishan Daphtary, son of Shri Kisanlal Ratanlal, graduated in law at the University of Cambridge and received after its completion with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) his legal admission as a barrister . A post-graduate studies , he graduated with a Master of Arts (MA) and spent several years as a lawyer involved and temporarily president of the Indian Bar Association (Bar Association of India) . After India gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, he became Solicitor General of India in the Nehru I cabinet in 1951 and held this position as legal advisor to the government in the Nehru II , Nehru III and Nehru IV cabinets until his replacement by HN Sanyal on March 1, 1963. He himself succeeded Motilal Chimanlal Setalvad as Attorney General of India in this cabinet reshuffle on March 2, 1963 and held this position in the Shastri cabinet and in the Indira Gandhi I cabinet until October 30th 1968 held, whereupon Niren De took his successor.

For his services in the public service, CK Daphtary was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1967, after the Bharat Ratna the second highest civilian merit order in the country. On April 3, 1972 he was appointed a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian Parliament , and was a member of this until April 2, 1978. His marriage to Shrimati Sushila Daphtary had a son and two daughters.
