C. Kevin Boyce

Charles Kevin Boyce (* 1974 ) is an American paleobotanist .

Boyce graduated from Caltech , where he received bachelor's degrees in biology and literature in 1995 (with a special focus on Geoffrey Chaucer ). From 1999 to 2001 he was a Predoctoral Fellow of the Carnegie Institution . In 2001 he received his PhD in evolutionary biology from Harvard University . His dissertation topic was Leaves, lignin, and the evolution of novel organ and cell types in early land plants . As a post-doctoral student , he was at the NASA Astrobiology Institute until 2003. In 2003 he became an assistant professor and later an associate professor at the University of Chicago . He has been an Associate Professor at Stanford University since 2013 .

In the appreciation of the MacArthur Foundation, his contributions to the paleoecology of plants and their influence on the climate of the past and his interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues from geochemistry , climate research and plant physiology , who contributed to clarifying the development of essential anatomical components of plants, were highlighted. He used methods of X-ray microscopy and spectroscopy to examine fossils microscopically down to the cellular level. For example, he demonstrated an increase in the density of the leaf veins in angiosperms, which led to higher water transport and turnover, with an impact on the development of rainforests in the tropics. The increase in the density of the leaf veins was an adaptation to global warming, which contributed to the triumph of angiosperms 100 million years ago. He is also researching how increased carbon dioxide levels in the earth's past and future will affect plant evolution.

In 2013 he became a MacArthur Fellow . In 2011 he became a Fellow of the Paleontological Society . In 2011 he received the Charles Schuchert Award and in 2012 the WS Cooper Award from the Ecological Society of America. Since 2004 he has been associated with the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. In 2006/07 he chaired the paleobotany section of the Botanical Society of America .
