Company formation

In 1979, Jürgen Gelf set up his own business in his home office in Berg near Ravensburg / Weingarten , mediating and selling large computers to second users. CHG Computer-Handels-Gesellschaft was entered in the commercial register as a limited liability company . Within a short period of time, the leasing of IT systems became the focus of business. In addition to providing end devices, the company also helped its customers to efficiently manage the relevant infrastructure, for example to avoid unnecessary multiple purchases of peripheral devices and software packages. To expand the portfolio, at the beginning of the 1990s they worked intensively with the Neckarsulm-based TDS group (“Tele-Daten-Service”), a leading operator of several data centers at the time. TDS became a co-partner of CHG.

Growth strategy

In the 1990s, CHG underwent major restructuring to create a basis for the acquisition of several competitors. As a result of numerous restructurings, the owners converted the company into a stock corporation under the name CHG-Meridian Deutsche Computer Leasing. Jürgen Gelf, who had already withdrawn from operational business in 1992, moved to the top of the supervisory board. In 2003, CHG-Meridian opened its new headquarters in Weingarten, where the company is still based today. The majority of 200 employees nationwide moved into their offices there.

CHG-Meridian had developed into a leading manufacturer and bank-independent leasing company in the field of information technology in Germany , whose customers also included some DAX companies. In addition, CHG-Meridian invested in the processing of leasing returns by setting up a new technology and service center. The sale of used hardware and software was a decisive prerequisite for being able to offer permanently competitive leasing conditions. The previous IT portfolio was expanded in 2004 to include industrial systems and medical technology.

International expansion

In the 2000s, internationalization played an increasingly important role for CHG-Meridian: After the establishment of branches in Austria and the United Kingdom, investments in France, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands followed, as well as expansion to Russia, the Czech Republic and in 2004 Slovakia. In 2004 the French company Finexis was taken over, in 2006 the Belgian CSL Group. However, the acquisition of a majority stake in the leasing company El Camino Resources International based in Canada, Mexico and the United States in 2009 proved to be decisive, enabling CHG-Meridian to expand its global presence in over a dozen countries. Other smaller acquisitions followed. In this way, the volume of new investments by the company's customers exceeded the billion euro mark for the first time in 2014.

Recent developments

In 2013 Jürgen Gelf, founder and chairman of the supervisory board of CHG-Meridian, died. Since then there have been various changes in the management and management of the company, which has continued to grow in all major markets. This also included takeovers, for example of Acento from Norway and the Australian Equigroup. CHG-Meridian also recorded a strong recovery through the development of the “Erasure” procedure for the erasure of data carriers, which is certified by independent testing agencies. 2018 was a record year for the company in all areas.
