Caazapá ( Guaraní Ka'asapa ) is a district city and capital of the Caazapá department in Paraguay , 230 km from Asunción. The city has about 7,000 inhabitants, the entire district 26,500. The name comes from the Guarani language and the expression Ka'aguy jehasapa , which means "behind the forest".

history

Caazapá was founded on January 10th, 1607 with the discovery of the rock spring "Ykua Bolaños", which is now in the city park, by the Franciscan Luis de Bolaños . The place was initially called San José de Tebicuary . The indigenous people in this area had been resisting the Spanish colonial rulers and their encomienda system for 40 years when the Franciscan Bolaños came to them in January 1607 to evangelize them. In an aggressive mood, they demanded proof of the existence of "his" God from him. They asked for water because they were suffering from a long period of drought. The missionary then took them to a place about a kilometer from today's town center and showed them this rock spring, which also carried water during all subsequent periods of drought. This event is considered a miracle by the population to this day. The city is therefore known as the “Magic City” (Ciudad del Hechizo).

climate

The mean temperatures fluctuate between 25 and 26 ° C from December to January and 16-17 ° C from June to August. The mean maximum temperature is 32 ° C, the mean minimum temperature is 11 ° C. The driest month is July with 64 mm of precipitation, the most precipitation falls in April with 167 mm.

economy

The main industries are agriculture and livestock. Rice, soy, cassava, corn, sugar cane and cotton are grown, the latter, however, to an ever decreasing extent, and it is gradually being replaced by citrus fruits.
