Cabrits National Park is situated on a peninsula at the north end of the Caribbean - island Dominica , north of Portsmouth . The park comprises 1,313 acres (531 ha) of tropical forests, coral reefs and wetlands. Originally there was a British garrison at Fort Shirley . The national park was established in 1986.

Surname

"Cabrits" is the Spanish , French and Portuguese term for goats . Goats had been left on the island by seafarers so that fresh meat would be available the next time they landed.

geography

Cabrits is an extinct volcano with two cones that originally formed its own island off the coast of Dominica. The narrow and shallow inlet was filled in by debris and alluvial deposits from Douglas Bay and Prince Rupert Bay. The national park is an important sanctuary for the island's reptiles . All but four species of reptile are represented on the hills and in the adjacent wetland.

Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley was an 18th century British military outpost defending Dominica's north. The fort consisted of more than 50 buildings and housed more than 600 men. It was abandoned in 1854 and the local historian Lennox Honychurch did not restore it until 1989. Some buildings on the south side of the peninsula have been completely rebuilt, while ruins of the remaining buildings can be found scattered across the peninsula. Douglas Bay Battery was on the north side and Bluff Point Gun Battery on the western summit .
