biography

The nickname Cactus got Pryor in reference to the theater of the same name in Austin, which was directed by his father "Skinny" Pryor. He gained greater fame after switching from radio to the regional television station KTBC, where he worked on satirical news, among other things.

In 1950, under the name Cactus Pryor and His Pricklypears, Cry of the Dying Duck in a Thunderstorm , a parody of Tennessee Ernie Ford's The Cry of the Wild Goose , entered the Billboard Country Charts , where the track reached number seven. In the course of the 1950s, more singles appeared, but the chart entry could not be repeated.

Pryor, who was inducted into the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame , played supporting roles in The Intrepid and The Green Devils , both films with John Wayne , in 1968 . In 1986 he was in The Answer is Lead (OT: Trespasses ).

After several more successful years, including as a radio host, Pryor died in August 2011 in his hometown of Austin.
