Cactus World News is an Irish indie rock band from Dublin . The band was formed in 1984 by Frank Kearns (guitar) and Eoin McEvoy (vocals) and included Wayne Sheehy (drums) and Fergal MacAndris (bass). After their breakup in 1991, the band was reformed in 2011 with a new line-up of Kearns, Sheehy and MacAndris with Eoin Scott and Eoin Watkins.

history

The first release and the most famous song by Cactus World News is The Bridge , which was produced by U2s Bono and released on their Mother Records label. Cactus World News toured the UK in 1985 with The Cult and signed a record deal with MCA Records. On May 17, 1986, the band performed at the Self Aid concert in Dublin. The group released their debut album Urban Beaches, produced by Chris Kimsey , in 1986 and garnered some attention in the UK with their three singles Years Later , Worlds Apart and a new recording by The Bridge . All three singles hit the UK Singles Chart. Before their second album No Shelter could be released in 1989, the band was released from their recording contract and underwent several personnel changes. MacAindris and Sheehy both gave up in 1989. McEvoy and Kearns went on for a few more years and various other band members came and went, including Chris McGoldrick (bass), John Doyle (bass) and JJ Collier (drums).

In June 2011 it was announced that Cactus World News would be reformed after 20 years (with the exception of Eoin McEvoy, who had other commitments) to support the befriended band Simple Minds on July 30, 2011 in Kerry, Ireland.

In February 2015, the band announced a PledgeMusic campaign to release the album Found , a collection of very rare and previously unreleased tracks.

In 2016 guitarist Frank Kearns realized the musical project Speed of the Stars together with Steve Kilbey from the group The Church .
