Caetobriga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caetobriga (also Caetobrix , Catobriga or Cetobriga ; Greek  Καιτόβριε Kaitobrie ) was a Roman settlement and port city in the province of Lusitania , today in the delta of the Sado river near Setúbal in southern Portugal .

history

Even under the Celts and Phoenicians, this place was a transshipment point for salt from the nearby Sado salt pans and for fish caught in the Atlantic. It will be an Ibero-Celtic settlement. This can be seen from the suffix “–briga” which is typical for Celtic settlements on the Iberian Peninsula, there are more than 100 Iron Age places with this name. Under the Romans, Caetobriga was developed into an important trading center with a port. The ruins of the port of Caetobriga mark the largest pre-industrial complex of fish processing found on the Iberian Peninsula . There was activity here from the 1st century AD until the end of the 4th century. It is very likely that the name of Setúbal comes from Caetobriga. Abul , Tróia and the Concheiros of Comporta are nearby .

The remains of the ancient city, which was destroyed by a tidal wave in AD 412 and not rebuilt, are located on a peninsula in the Grândola district across from Setúbal . The area can be reached and viewed from the main road.
