history

The American insurance company commissioned architect Alajos Hauszmann with the planning of their magnificent building on Budapest's Great Ring . Hauszmann, with the help of Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl , designed a historicist building with lavish decor (the statue decorations were made by Károly Senyey). Over the decades, the café became a popular meeting place for intellectuals and writers in Budapest. Among others, the following people frequented (and wrote): Ferenc Molnár , Dezső Kosztolányi , Frigyes Karinthy . Filmmakers such as Alexander Korda and Michael Curtiz also met here later , when his name was Mihály Kertész Kaminer .

The interior of the café with its twisted columns is partly reminiscent of the baroque church interior. During the communist era it was called " Hungaria ". After the turnaround and a long period of uncertainty, the building was taken over by the Italian hotel group Boscolo Hotels in February 2001 and converted into a luxury hotel with 107 rooms. In connection with the creation of the New York Palace Boscolo, Budapest , the café was also reactivated. The stylish renovation received the Europa Nostra medal in 2007 .
