The Cafe Au Go Go was a nightclub in Greenwich Village , New York in the basement of the 152 Bleecker Street below the Garrick Theater .

In 1964 the American comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested there for profanity together with the owner Howard Solomon . That same year, Solomon brought a group of musicians and singers there from an off-Broadway show and named them the Cafe Au Go Go Singers . These were intended as competition against the Bitter End Singers of the cafe of the same name on the same street. Solomon managed the group until its end in 1965. The Au Go Go Singers consisted of Kathy King (later toured with Bobby Vinton ), Jean Gurney , Michael Scott (later bassist for the Highwaymen ), Rick (Frederic) Geiger (later joined in the Light Opera), Roy Michaels (became a member of Cat Mother and toured with Jimi Hendrix , among others ), Stephen Stills and Richie Furay . Two other members, Nels Gustafson and Bob Harmelink , withdrew from the industry after the group broke up.

In addition, the folk / rock group "The Company" was formed there, which was made up of remaining members of the Cafe Au Go Go Singers . When the Rollins And Joffee Talent Agency sent the band on tour, Stephen Stills met Neil Young . He, Young and Richie Furay, another Au Go Go member, would later form the well-known rock group Buffalo Springfield together with bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin .

In 1966 Bruce Springsteen played his first New York gig on the 2nd floor of the cafe. In addition, the band Grateful Dead is said to have met there for the first time. Every week Richie Havens gave a concert in Cafe Au Go Go. Before bigger rock bands often appeared in the cafe in the next few years, mainly well-known jazz artists ( Bill Evans , Stan Getz etc.), comedians and folk singers performed.
