Qafiz
The Qafīz ( Arabic قفيز, DMG qafīz ), also Caffiso , Cafisso or Cafiso , was an Arabic measure of volume for pourable goods that was also used on the island of Malta , in Messina (Sicily) and Marseille . It held about 25 to 50 liters.
In the early Islamic centuries, 1 Qafīz = 8 Makkūk = 12 Sāʿ = 48 Mudd .
Different authors assign an independent measure to each spelling. The oil measure was for
- Malta 1 Caffiso = 1002.1 Parisian cubic inches = 19.878 liters = 4 ⅜ imperial gallons
- Malta 1 barile (oil) = 2 caffisi = 39.755 liters = 8 fourths = 32 quartucci = 128 terzi = 256 casbe
- Marseille 1 millerole (oil) = 5 ½ caffise
In Messina the oil was weighed and
- 1 caffiso = 12 ½ rotoli grossi ~ 11 kilograms
- 1 Tun = 236 gallons (old) = 196 ⅜ Imperial gallons = 74 Caffise = 1144.95141 liters
