Cagnaccio di San Pietro (born January 14, 1897 in Desenzano del Garda as Natale Bentivoglio Scarpa , † May 29, 1946 in Venice ) was an Italian painter of magical realism .

Life

The son of a lighthouse keeper , born as Natale Bentivoglio Scarpa, called himself Cagnaccio di San Pietro, after the origins of his family from the village of San Pietro. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice , where he was a student of Ettore Tito . After initially taking up the impulses of Futurism , his work of the 1920s showed the influence of the New Objectivity . He painted portraits , nudes , still lifes , public scenes and religious images in an almost photo-realistic mannerStyle. Due to his unstable health, he had to spend the war years in a hospital in Venice, where he died in 1946.

Works

One of his best-known pictures, After the Orgy (1928) shows three undressed women sleeping on the floor next to playing cards, empty champagne bottles and cigarettes. The objects scattered around the room, including a bowler hat , a cuff and white gloves, suggest that the viewer is looking down at the remains of an orgy of the bourgeoisie of the Italian interwar period. The disturbing fact that the three women are obviously three views of a single woman, and the unreal lighting of the stage-like scenery, make After the Orgy a prime example of Italian-style magical realism . The supercooled realism of this work can also be seen in his still lifes, which often show crabs, lobsters or glass objects (e.g. the bottles and tubes of the hospital). Other works include a .:
