Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Pi is a small bay and a settlement named after it (Urbanització) on the south coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the southern part of the municipality of Llucmajor .

The Bay

Boat houses (escars) and shelters

The Cala Pi is a rocky sea inlet about 420 meters long and up to 100 meters wide on the steep coast of Llucmajor, about 14 kilometers southwest of the main town of the municipality. The bay forms the mouth of the Torrent de Cala Pi , a torrent that only carries water after heavy rainfall. While the settlement of Cala Pi adjoins to the southeast and east, the hinterland to the north and west, the area of Camp des Àngels and es Sementeret , is not built on. At the southeast entrance to the bay , on Cape Punta de Cala Pi, there is the Torre de Cala Pi , built in 1663 , a watchtower to protect against attacks by North African corsairs .

The beach

The beach of Cala Pi is 50 meters wide and stretches 125 meters into the Torrent de Cala Pi gorge . A brackish pond can remain there for a long time after rainfall . The rocky slopes of the gorge are covered with pine trees. From the Cala Pi settlement, stairs lead down to the cliffs on the east side to the beach. The beach consists of fine sand and is monitored by a wooden tower. Due to the curvature of the bay, the open sea can not be seen from the shore at the mouth of the Torrent de Cala Pi . On the west side of the beach there are several boat houses, Catalan escars , and simple boat shelters. Occasionally, smaller ships anchor in the shelter of the bay.

The settlement

The settlement of Cala Pi is located to the east of the bay, high on a steep cliff facing southwest. The place has 630 inhabitants, 347 of whom live in the actual settlement core (as of 2012). It extends along the coast from the Torre de Cala Pi in the west to the Torrent de Sa Punta de Sa Dent in the east. There is the Vallgornera settlement . Cala Pi is a residential area with a few small hotels, several restaurants and two small supermarkets. Many of the upscale single-family homes belong to foreigners, including Germans.

Access

The place Cala Pi can be reached from the main road MA-6014 from Capocorb Vell or via Vallgornera. The road starts in S'Arenal and runs along the coast to Cap Blanc . From there the MA-6014 turns into the interior of the island to Capocorb Vell and then swings to the east, where it later merges into the MA-6101 and ends in Ses Salines . East of Capocorb Vell, the MA-6015 crosses from Llucmajor in the north to the south coast at S'Estanyol de Migjorn.

The beach and the bay can be reached via long stairs. It starts west of the Cala Pi settlement and leads down to the beach on the rocks on the east side of the bay.
