The Calanda was the first ship in Swiss ocean shipping . The ship was built in 1913, sailed under different flags for different owners and was the first ocean-going ship to fly the Swiss flag in April 1941.

history

The tramp steamer in 1913 with the hull number 180 of the shipyard William Pickersgill in Sunderland for the shipping company Strath Steamship Company in Cardiff built. The ship called Helmsloch was managed by EL Downing, who took over the ship completely in 1917. The Helmsloch was a three-island ship with two fore, two aft and one in the middle of the divided midship superstructure with a cargo hold each with an intermediate deck . The cargo harness consisted of two cargo trees per hatch. The machinery, also located amidships, with two coal-fired steam boilers and a triple expansion steam engine from the Sunderland manufacturer J. Dickinson & Sons developed around 1850 hp (395 NHP ) and brought the ship to a speed of up to nine knots .

1929 London society Livanos Brothers acquired the helmet hole and baptized them in Michael L to. The Greek shipping company JG Livanos from Chios initially took over the management and acquired the ship entirely in 1930. Four years later, Livanos sold the steamer to the London shipping company GW Grace & Company, which gave it the name Roehampton . Another four years later the ship sailed as the Lettonia of the shipping company J. Zalcmanis, K. Jansons & J. Freymann, which passed it on to the Panamanian Compania des Transportes Maritimas in 1939 . In 1940 the ship was renamed to Anita before the Schweizerische Reederei AG from Basel bought the ship for 124,000 pounds and renamed it Calanda .

In the course of the Second World War , the tonnage shortage caused by the war made supplying inland Switzerland more difficult . After lengthy quarrels, the latter decided in 1941 to introduce its own shipping register . On April 19, 1941, the Calanda , which had previously been sailing under the Panamanian flag, was finally the first ship to fly the Swiss flag in the Italian port of Savona . In the course of the following war years, the ship made important supply trips, including two on behalf of the International Committee of the Red Cross . In 1941 and December 1944, the ship suffered severe storm damage and had to be repaired each time.

After six years of service with the Schweizerische Reederei AG, the ship was sold to the Danish shipping company Dampskipselskap Hetland A / S in 1946 for 55,000 pounds . This used the ship until 1949 under the name Storaa . The John Manners & Company then acquired the ship and renamed it to its last name, San Roberto . On January 17, 1953, the ship reached Hong Kong , where it was finally scrapped.
