Johann Calderara, a native of Milan , founded a toilet, soap and perfumery business in 1852 with relatively modest means. Josef Bankmann, born in Korneuburg in 1827 , joined the company as a partner in 1863. From this point on, the company took off steadily. Production was initiated to a greater extent and regulated in a rational manner, new sales channels for the products recognized by the public were sought out and secured. In 1868 the company owner received the kuk farm title . After the death of the founder Calderara in 1875 Josef Bankmann became the sole boss of the house.

In order to keep the production in technical and hygienic relation at the level of modern progress, Josef Bankmann visited the big world exhibitions and made several study trips to Germany, France and England. In this way the company succeeded in asserting itself against the competition of the most outstanding companies in domestic and foreign places. But not only in Europe, but also on overseas markets, the factory, which was equipped in-house with the most modern machines and employed an average of 80 female and 30 male workers (1903), sold its products.

For its toilet products, hygienic body care, perfumes and special items of the luxury class, the company received first awards at numerous exhibitions at which it was represented.

It received silver medals at the exhibitions in Paris in 1867 and 1878 , the Diplom d'Excellence and silver medals in Amsterdam in 1869 and 1883, the large gold medal in Moscow in 1872, the medal of merit in 1873 in Vienna , the exhibition medal in 1876 at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, the Progress Medal in Sydney in 1879 , the Silver Medal in Melbourne in 1881 , the Gold Medal in Nice in 1884, the Large Gold Medal in Antwerp in 1885 and the Gold Medal in Barcelona in 1888 . In 1903 the company received the Great Gold Medal in the "First International Exhibition of Historical Costumes and Contemporary Clothing Items and Their Accessories" in Petersburg. The company had also exhibited in the "National Industrial Exhibition" in Osaka .

The head of the house acted as a juror at various exhibitions. Josef Bankmann's personal merits were also recognized, as was the appreciation of foreign sovereigns. He was the owner of the Austro-Hungarian War Medal, the Gold Cross of Merit with the Crown, the Imperial Russian Large Gold Medal on the Ribbon of the Order of St. Anne , Knight of the Royal Belgian Order of Leopold and the Royal Spanish Order of Isabella . The two visits to the factory, in 1878 and 1885, by the Protector of the Lower Austrian Trade Association Archduke Carl Ludwig , were recorded as a special honor in the factory's memorial book.

The factory was located at Laxenburgerstrasse 123 in the 10th district of Favoriten, in the 1st district Am Graben 30 there was a product branch. There were other factories in Podgórze in Kraków and Kacik in 1926.

The company was officially deleted on December 22, 1998, the last managing director from 1975 was Berta Piwonka (born January 19, 1928). The last location address was Praterstrasse 12/8 in Vienna's 2nd district.

Products and advertising

Well-known Caba products were the toothpaste Hygiodont , the Parfum Surprise and the facial tonic Russian leather , which was produced until at least 1967.

Caba recognized the power of advertising and the importance of effective marketing early on, and worked with artists who designed the posters. Advertising or event stamps were used for advertising back then. Most of these stamps were issued between 1900 and 1918 and were already collected back then. The Hygiodont and Surprise advertising brands are only available in pink, green, blue or purple, white and black. In the advertising of Hygiodont, a lady from the turn of the century with a hat holds her pearl necklace up to her teeth to underline the slogan “ Teeth like pearls through Hygiodont ”. In the “Surprise” advertisement, the black shadow profile of a baroque lady with a green, striped background can be seen in an oval, white picture frame. Pink roses in a vase and in front of the profile are supposed to symbolize the smell of the perfume. With both brands, the name of the product and “Calderara & Bankmann Wien.” Can be read in white, pink and green under the portrait of the women.

An advertising poster from around 1920 from the Hans Neumann studio shows a close interweaving of images and writing. Seen from the side, it shows a lady sitting on a white elephant. The colors used and the round and jagged shapes are incorporated into the font and vary artistically. The Hans Neumann studio had a wide range of styles. In this case, the advertising poster is Art Deco and playful and decorative to match the Caba products.
