Wilhelm Johann Krafft (born August 5, 1833 in Schäßburg , † December 10, 1908 ) was a Transylvanian publisher.

Life

His parents were the master bookbinder and later orator Friedrich Wilhelm Krafft and his wife Charlotte Johanna, née Schmidt. His grandfather was a coppersmith and his great-grandfather the boot maker Simon Krafft (* 1694 in Schäßburg).

Wilhelm Johann Krafft attended the Schäßburg grammar school until he was 15 and began an apprenticeship as a printer in June 1848 with Johann Gött from Wehrheim, who had been running a printing company in Kronstadt since 1832 . In 1853 he went on a hike through Sibiu, Timisoara, Pforzheim in Baden, the Westphalian Minster, Schwerin, Berlin.

He returned in September 1858 and found a job in the printing works of Samuel Filtsch in Sibiu , where he was appointed managing director the following year. On February 21, 1860 he married Caroline Elisabetha Filtsch († 1897), with whom he had the son Carl Wilhelm Krafft (1861-1929) and three daughters. In 1868 he took over his father-in-law's print shop, renamed it to W. Krafft - book printing, bookstore, liner and paper bag factory , rationalized the business and moved to Reispergasse 10. Since his brother-in-law J. Spreer had taken over the Filtsche publishing house, he founded an own. He also founded a branch in Schäßburg, Marktplatz 30 (today Piața Hermann Oberth 39).

After the death of the Viennese publisher Karl Graeser (1849–1899), who came from Mediaș , he took over his entire holdings of Transylvanian books. He set up a publishing division for Romanian books and is said to have owned the largest warehouse of Romanian books. For publishing production belonged among others by Georg Daniel Teutsch begun and his son Frederick continued story of the Transylvanian Saxons for the Saxon people . He was awarded the Order of the Crown for the publication of the first conversation lexicon in Romanian .

His son, who also became a printing specialist and authorized signatory in 1883, took over the company in 1903. The merger with the printing company Josef Drotleff (1839–1929) resulted in the largest German publishing house in southeastern Europe.

He became a member of the board of directors of the Hermannstädter Allgemeine Sparkasse. With its director Carl Wolff , he founded the Raiffeisen Association in 1892 .

Wilhelm Johann last lived with his youngest daughter Mathilde v. Grand Master.

His grandson Gustav Markus took over the Schäßburg branch as Markus Druckerei in 1920 and moved to Kronstadt .
