Caldicot ( Welsh Cil-y-coed) is a town and civil parish in Monmouthshire in south-east Wales . It lies on the north side of the mouth of the River Severn .

Caldicot is well connected to the rail network providing connections to Newport and Cardiff in the west and Chepstow , Lydney and Gloucester in the east. There is also a connection to Bristol via the Severn Tunnel . In addition to the railway, Caldicot is very easy to reach by road. The M4 and M48 motorways run towards the capital Cardiff or over the Severn Bridge and Prince of Wales Bridge to England. According to the 2011 census, the city of Caldicot has 9,604 inhabitants.

history

The first traces of settlement in what is now the municipality go back to the Bronze Age . During excavations near Caldicot Castle in the former river bed, a plank and other wooden parts of a ship were found. It is believed that this trade was made to Somerset . In the age of the Romans , further trade connections, for example to Caerwent , were established.

education

There are five primary schools in the urban area of Caldicot.

The new building for the secondary school opened in November 2017 and offers space for 1,500 students. For the first time, all student councils are now housed under one roof. The building, which cost more than 35 million pounds, replaced the old building from 1958, among other things.
