Calendulauda is a genus of larks . A German name has not yet been used for this genus. There are eight species of this genus and all occur exclusively in Africa.
Most of the species are classified by the IUCN as not endangered ( least concern ). An exception is the Oranjelerche , which due to loss of habitat only occurs in a distribution area of just under 1000 square kilometers.
The name Calendulauda is a combination of two other generic names from the lark family: the generic name Calendula and Alauda, which is no longer in use . All species of the genus were originally assigned to the genus Mirafra , others have since been assigned to the genus Alauda or Certhilauda .
features
The species of the genus Calendulauda are medium-sized larks. The beaks are strong and medium-long. The nostrils are covered with small feathers. The wings are long and clearly pointed: the tenth (innermost) hand wing is small, but clearly visible. The tail is short to medium in length. The rear claw is only slightly curved and about as long as the rear toe.
species
Eight types are distinguished, most of which have several subspecies:
- Steppe Lark ( Calendulauda africanoides )
- Sabotalerche ( Calendulauda Sabota )
- Oranjelerche ( Calendulauda burra )
- Barlow Lark ( Calendulauda barlowi )
- White-breasted Lark ( Calendulauda poecilosterna )
- Red Dune Lark ( Calendulauda erythrochlamys )
- Fox Lark ( Calendulauda alopex )
- Karoolerche ( Calendulaluda albescens )
Way of life
The diet consists of insects and seeds.
Like all larks, the Calendulauda species are ground breeders. Not all species breed annually. The Karoolerche, which occurs in the semi-deserts of southern Africa, does not breed in years with little rainfall. Something similar is suspected for the Barlow lark , which also occurs in southern Africa .
