The red dune lark ( Calendulauda erythrochlamys ) is a large, brightly feathered and long-beaked species from the lark family. Its size corresponds roughly to that of a skylark . The distribution area of ​​the red dune lark is in southwest Africa. No subspecies are distinguished. The red dune lark has long been classified as a subspecies of the Karoolerche . From today's perspective, it forms a super species together with the Oranjelerche , the Karoolerche and the Barlow lark .

The IUCN classifies the red dune lark as not endangered ( least concern ).

The red dune lark reaches a body length of about 17 to 18 centimeters, of which 6.4 to 6.6 centimeters are accounted for by the tail. The beak measures 1.88 to 2.08 centimeters measured from the beak. Red Dune Larks weigh about 26 to 33 grams. There is no gender dimorphism.

The red dune lark is a very light-colored species of lark. The top of the body is light red-brown to pink-brown and almost without dashed lines. The hand and arm wings are lined with whitish. The over-eye stripe is also white. A darker line runs from the base of the beak over the eye to almost the neck. The chin and throat are whitish. The rest of the underside of the body is also whitish, only brownish lines can be found on the front breast. The feet are red-brown.

Possible confusion

Due to its size and plumage, the red dune lark cannot be confused with any other species of lark in its range. The Namibian Lark , which occurs in the same region, is pinnate in the color of sand and has a much stronger bill. The Oranjelerche has red to brownish plumage and a very striped chest and a thick bill.

Distribution area and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the red dune lark extends in Namibia from the village of Aus in a northerly direction to Walvis Bay . She is a resident .

The habitat of the red dune lark are the dunes of the Namib and the adjacent dry and sandy river beds.

Way of life

Like all larks, the red dune lark is a ground breeder. The breeding season falls between October and May. The nest is arched like a roof. The clutch consists of two to three eggs. A singing flight is part of the male's territory-indicating behavior. The males also sing from raised areas or low bushes.
